Cayman Islands History
- The Cayman Islands were first discovered by Christopher Columbus on May 10, 1503. He spotted Cayman Brac and Little Cayman first, and named them Las Tortugas, after the many sea turtles in the waters.
- The first known visitor to the islands was Sir Francis Drake who arrived in 1586 and called the islands the Cayman Islands.
- The first settlements were located on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac during 1661-71.
- The Cayman Islands were captured by the Spanish along with Jamaica and then surrendered to England in 1670 under the treaty of Madrid.
- British Privateers still roamed the area including the famous Blackbeard until the 18th century in breach of the treaty.
- The islands were governed by a single colony until 1962 when they became a British overseas territory.
- Isaac Bodden was the first recorded permanent inhabitant of the Cayman Islands. He was born in Grand Cayman in around 1700, and he was the grandson of the original settler named Bodden who was thought to be one of Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers.
- Although Cayman was always regarded as a dependency of Jamaica, in 1831 a legislative assembly was established.
- Slavery on the islands was abolished in 1834 paving the way for the development of a homogeneous society.
