Jamaica, a rich cultural history.

Puerto Rico has a rich and complex history. Originally inhabited by the Taíno people, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage to the Americas and was claimed for Spain. It remained a Spanish colony for over 400 years, during which time it became an important military and trade hub.
In 1898, after the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States under the Treaty of Paris. In 1917, Puerto Ricans were granted U.S. citizenship, and in 1952, the island became a U.S. Commonwealth, allowing for self-governance while remaining under U.S. jurisdiction.
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, Puerto Rico has experienced political debates over its status—whether to remain a commonwealth, pursue U.S. statehood, or seek independence. Today, it is known for its unique blend of Spanish, African, and American influences, making it a culturally vibrant and historically significant island.
