St. Croix, a rich cultural history.
- 1493: The first inhabitants of St Croix were the Ciboney Caribs and Arawak tribes. Christopher Columbus arrived on the islands in 1493 and named the islands The Virgins in reference to the legendary beauty of St Ursula and her 1,000 virgins. The period after Columbus visited the islands was relatively quiet, although it is believed that Spanish settlers on nearby Puerto Rico raided the islands regularly forcing many of the Indian inhabitants to work while others fled. The indigenous groups on St Croix were wiped out when the Europeans arrived as they were not immune to any of their diseases, and were not prepared to deal with the harsh labor they were forced into. Within several decades the population of Indians on St Croix had plummeted.
- 1600 AD: The early 1600's saw much interest in St Croix from countries including England and Holland, who went on to colonize St Croix and jointly inhabit it in 1620. This pairing didn't last long, with the arrival of the Spanish, followed by the French, who made St Croix a French colony until 1733.
- 1800 - 1900 AD: The Slave trade in the Sugar plantations on St Croix thrived until a massive rebellion occurred on the island leading to the abolition of slavery in 1848. Plantation owners began abandoning their estates leading to a decline in the economy. The island of St Croix was purchased by the US for $25 million in gold along with the other islands in 1917. By the mid 1900's the tourism industry began, bringing about new-found wealth to the island with restaurants, shops and hotels springing up. Today tourism is still one of the biggest industries on St Croix.
